Greek opposition calls for election after fourth day of riots
Police clash with demonstrators outside parliament as government faces increasing pressure
Link to this video
The main opposition party in Greece
today called for early elections after accusing the government of
failing to protect the country, as it experiences its worst unrest in
decades. As hundreds of protesters clashed with police outside
the Greek parliament, the Socialist opposition leader, George
Papandreou, said Greeks had lost trust in the government as the
disorder across the country entered its fourth day, triggered when a
schoolboy was shot dead by police."The country doesn't have a
government to protect it," he said, speaking after emergency talks with
the prime minister, Costas Karamanlis. "Citizens are experiencing a
multiple crisis: a social crisis, a crisis of values. People have lost
trust in the government."Ranks of police, forming a cordon
outside parliament, stood their ground when a crowd, many throwing
stones, tried to break through to march on the legislature. The protesters, mainly students, regrouped repeatedly to advance on the police line, wearing handkerchiefs against the teargas. "The
only thing this government can offer is to resign and turn to the
people for its verdict," Papandreou told a party meeting inside
parliament. "We claim power." Karamanlis today began emergency
talks with top politicians, urging them to unite against the face of
civil unrest, as he struggles to reassert his authority.
"We won't show any leniency," he said. "No
one has the right to use this tragic incident as an excuse for acts of
violence. At this critical time, the political world must unite to
condemn those responsible for this disaster and isolate them."It
is unclear what measures the government is considering after a the
chaos in Greek cities following the death of 15-year-old Alexandros
Grigoropoulos on Saturday. His funeral today could inflame an
already volatile situation. With a general strike over economic policy
planned for tomorrow, the government's position is looking increasingly
precarious.Violence has also resumed in the northern city of
Thessaloniki and in Ioannina, and Greek demonstrators occupied the
country's consulate in Paris. Karamanlis's party holds a
one-seat majority in parliament and was already trailing the opposition
Socialists by more than five percentage points before the riots. The
government has denied reports it will declare a state of emergency, but
last night the interior minister, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, signalled the
authorities would take a firmer stance against rioters in the worst
disturbances to hit the country since the collapse of military rule in
1974.Emerging from a three-hour emergency cabinet meeting, he
said: "What is happening both for the economy of our country and our
democracy is unacceptable. We will not tolerate these events. We will
do what we must."But thousands took to the streets again,
burning shops and buildings and even setting alight a Christmas tree in
the centre of Athens. One hotel's windows were smashed and guests
evacuated. The four-storey Olympic Airways office in central Athens was
completely burned, as well as a bank and more than 130 shops.Rioters
threw rocks and petrol bombs at riot police and set up barricades
across downtown streets. Smoke rose above the city centre, mingling
with clouds of teargas. Broken glass littered the streets. The
disturbances also intensified in the country's second-largest city,
Salonika, where masked and hooded youths threw rocks and petrol bombs
at riot police, who responded with teargas. Rioting also broke out in
Trikala, a city in the country's agricultural heartland.Demonstrators
occupied the Greek consulate in Berlin, and in London five men were
arrested after protesters clashed with police outside the Greek embassy. The
riots were triggered by an incident late on Saturday in which
Grigoropoulos was shot dead by a policeman, allegedly at point-blank
range, after youths were said to have thrown objects at a patrolling
police car in the gritty Athenian district of Exarchia.Earlier
yesterday, Karamanlis, accused "extremists" of exploiting the shooting
and pledged to take "immediate" action to compensate those whose
properties had been destroyed, saying: "The state has a duty to protect
society and the citizen."But the sheer scale of the destruction
has put the ruling New Democrats on the defensive. "It is as if the
state [machinery], the government, has collapsed," said Ioannis
Rougissis, a spokesman for the opposition Pasok party.Papandreou
lashed out at the New Democrats - who are in power with a wafer-thin
majority - for being out of touch with reality. "The whole country,
every citizen, is exasperated with a government that doesn't understand
the real problems of the people," he said. "Everyone is saying enough
is enough."The shooting of the schoolboy on Saturday quickly
laid bare the simmering tensions between the police and members of
alleged anarchist groups, who retaliated by going on the rampage. But
the teenager's death has given vent to a deeper anger that has also
been mounting in Greece. With many struggling to make ends meet,
and one in five living below the poverty line, there is growing anger
at the tough fiscal policies of a government determined to reach the
prescriptive benchmarks set out by Brussels and rein in budget
deficits. The disaffection has been exacerbated by allegations of
corruption and a series of scandals implicating members of Karamanlis's
inner circle.High school students have rushed to join the
protests, throwing stones at police in clashes in front of the Athens
parliament yesterday, and on islands and mainland towns nationwide."A
lot of teenagers identify with Grigoropoulos," said Christos Mazanitis,
an Athenian journalist. "There's a whole generation out there who see
their parents in debt and feel they have nothing to look forward to in
the future. Fear and despair are what these riots are about."

LONDON – Ahhh, Britain. The land of Shakespeare and the Beatles, Churchill and the Queen. Rolling green hills, groovy London shops, hip plaids splashed over raincoats and umbrellas.
Cut to the reality of 2009: the highest teen pregnancy rate in western Europe, a binge drinking culture that leaves drunk teens splayed out in the streets and rising knife crime that has turned some pub fights into deadly affairs.
Ahhh, Britain.
In the latest symbol of what some are calling "broken Britain," 13-year-old Alfie and his 15-year-old girlfriend Chantelle became parents last week. The news sparked a flurry of handwringing from the media — and even ordinary folk admitted it didn't help that Alfie barely looked 10, let alone 13, as he cradled his newborn daughter.
Alfie's father, who reportedly has nine or 10 children of his own, gamely promised to have a "birds and the bees" chat with his son to prevent him from producing a second child before he grows facial hair.
Somehow that was not reassuring.
Sir Bernard Ingham, once press secretary to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, told the Associated Press that people from across Britain's political spectrum are in despair over the country's social breakdown.
"It's an indication that we've lost our way, that people don't know the difference between right and wrong," he said of young Alfie. "The plain fact is society can't proceed on this basis. I think this is an indication of broken Britain."
Ingham said Britain's binge drinking and youth violence reflect the same general fall in standards and discipline.
"I think in time there will be a swing against this permissiveness," he said, noting a shift from British debauchery in the 18th century to Victorian straight-laced standards 100 years later.
Binge drinking has produced a rise in liver disease among Britons in their 20s and the unpleasant reputation of British "lager louts" at holiday resorts across Europe.
On any given night, London residents can see drunken teens staggering through the Underground subway system. Usually their friends help them, but sometimes collapsed teens are left on their own until police or transit staff intervene.
The rise in knife crime harkens back to the 1950s "West Side Story" era in the United States. The number of robberies carried out with knives rose 18 percent for the third quarter of 2008 compared to the year before, according to government figures released in January.
Too often now, public disputes have ended in teen stabbing deaths. Rob Knox, an 18-year-old actor in a "Harry Potter" film, was killed in May, while Ben Kinsella, the 16-year-old brother of a television soap actress, was stabbed to death in June. Both were trying to break up fights in London.
Other, less well-known youths have also died in knife fights.
All this was bemoaned, but the final straw came this week, when Britain's intensely competitive tabloids focused on the young, clueless Alfie.
Alfie's daughter Maisie was reportedly conceived when he was 12. Chantelle's parents let the lad spend the night with their daughter, 14 at the time, at their public housing unit near Eastbourne, 70 miles southeast of London.
There are still some questions about the birth. The Sun newspaper did not say whether any tests were conducted to prove the boy's paternity, and The Sunday Times reported that at least two other teens claimed to have slept with the young mother.
Alfie told The Sun he plans to look after his newborn daughter. But in a heartbreaking interview, the boy admitted he didn't know what the word "financially" meant and acknowledged he doesn't even get an allowance.
While some saw a larger portrait of society's ills in Maisie's birth to underage parents, others called it an aberration.
"I think it's really shocking and sad," said Duncan Lees, 36, a caterer. "I think it's really wrong. But it's not like it happens everyday. The fact that it's making such a headline is something in itself. I think it's good that everybody is saying that it's wrong."
He did blame the youngsters' parents for failing to properly look after their children.
"You have to ask what their responsibilities are to their children," he said.
There was also an element of class consciousness in many reactions — not surprising in a country where status is often based on where you live, what car you drive and whether your children go to private school.
"I think it's very sad," said retiree Risdon Nicholls. "But they lived in a poor part of Eastbourne. That's not common practice in the rest of Eastbourne, which is a very smart town."
Nicholls said the British media was exploiting a one-time situation.
"They make it sound as if we're going to the dogs, and we're not," he said adamantly. "This is still a wonderful country — but it's clear standards have dropped."

Action Video Games Improve Vision
Video games with lots of action, such as the shoot-'em-up variety, can improve your vision, a new study finds.
Players became up to 58 percent better at perceiving fine contrast differences in the tests.
"If you are driving at dusk with light fog it could make the difference between seeing the car in front of you or not seeing it," study leader Daphne Bavelier told LiveScience.
The ability to discern slight differences in shades of gray, or contrast sensitivity, is the primary limiting factor in how well one sees, said Bavelier, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester.
"Normally, improving contrast sensitivity means getting glasses or eye surgery-somehow changing the optics of the eye," she said. "But we've found that action video games train the brain to process the existing visual information more efficiently, and the improvements last for months after game play stopped."
The new finding suggests action video game used as training devices may be a useful complement to eye-correction techniques, Bavelier said, since it may teach the brain's visual cortex to make better use of the information it receives.
In 2007, Bavelier found that action video games substantially increase a player's ability to accurately see objects in a cluttered space. A study at the University of Oregon found that some video games improve the ability of children age 4 to 6 to focus their attention, also by training the brain.
In the new study, her team tested the contrast sensitivity function of 22 students, then divided them into two groups: One group played the action video games "Unreal Tournament 2004" and "Call of Duty 2." The other played "The Sims 2," which is richly visual, but does not require as much visual-motor coordination.
The volunteers each played 50 hours during the 9-week test. Then their vision was tested again.
Those who played the action games showed an average 43 percent improvement in their ability to discern close shades of gray - close to the difference Bavelier had previously observed between game players and non-game players - whereas the Sims players showed no improvement.
When comparing people who played action video games routinely for more than six months to those who do not play them, the increase was 58 percent, Bavelier said.
"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that contrast sensitivity can be improved by simple training," says Bavelier. "When people play action games, they're changing the brain's pathway responsible for visual processing. These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it, and we've seen the positive effect remains even two years after the training was over."
So despite concerns that time spent playing action video games could be bad for people, that time may not necessarily be harmful, at least for vision, she said.
The research, funded by the National Eye Institute and the Office of Naval Research, is detailed today in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
